Matrix Preps For Growth In Medical Device Market

Wood Dale, IL ¯ April 17, 2006

Partners Matrix Tooling, Inc. and Matrix Plastic Products are busy putting the finishing touches on their new class 100,000 clean room and adding ISO 13485 compliance to their existing ISO 9000:2000 quality system. Both enhancements are designed to better meet the needs of medical device customers and prepare for further growth in that market.

Satisfied customers like Cardica, Inc., a Redwood City, CA developer of coronary bypass devices, are providing the motivation. "Matrix has been a critical partner in the design and development of our FDA cleared C-Port® Anastomosis System," says Bryan Knodel, Vice President of Research & Development.  "They consistently supply Cardica with our most critical and intricate components.  These are very technically challenging components that evolve over the course of a project, and Matrix's responsiveness and ability to be intimately involved in our design and development process has been key to the success of this groundbreaking product."

The Matrix team shares a modern 30,000 square foot facility in Wood Dale, IL. Matrix Tooling, Inc. is a full-service designer and builder of precision plastic injection molds for critical applications, including microtooling and multi-shot. Many require holding +/-.0005" tolerances on the molded parts. Matrix Plastic Products offers custom injection molding from 22-300 tons. Customized inspection capabilities range from first article inspections to all levels of PPAP's and are tailored to each customer's needs. Automation is heavily utilized in the quality assurance process, allowing for unattended inspection on multi-sensor vision systems.

The new clean room will utilize electric presses equipped with robotics and vision systems for unattended front line inspection capabilities, with an eye on identifying any potential problems at the earliest possible stage.

Both companies have been ISO certified since 1999, and the ISO 13485 quality standard is being added to assure the additional traceability requirements that the medical device industry requires. "We are taking the best of both standards and making our quality system even stronger," says Gary Johansson, Quality Assurance Manager. "At the same time, we are giving our medical customers an added level of confidence in us."

In addition to medical applications, Matrix has served OEM's in the telecommunications, electronic, automotive, and personal care industries since 1978. Matrix will be exhibiting at NPE 2006 booth-# 11252 in the Moldmakers' Pavilion.
